Using the Archives

 

Availability
The Archives is open for use by researchers and the public by appointment only. Our business hours are Monday through Wednesday and Friday 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Unprocessed material is generally closed to public use.

Requests
Genealogical requests are accepted by mail only. Please enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope. For requests regarding records from closed parishes and dispensation records we ask a donation of at least $10 per name/per sacrament. Photocopies are 10˘ per copy plus postage (if necessary.) Photograph duplication subject to $15 fee plus costs of duplication. United States copyright laws apply to all duplicated materials.

Sacramental Records
The sacramental records of the Diocese of Brooklyn have not been centralized. This means that you should first contact the appropriate parish to obtain a sacramental record, supplying them with the name and date you want them to check. To determine the appropriate parish you will first need to determine the address the party lived at during the time period you are interested in.
 
1. Determine the address of your party:
To determine a place of residence, we suggest that you search the vital records (birth, marriage, death) at the NYC Municipal Archives; search the Brooklyn City Directories found at the Municipal Archives or the New York and Brooklyn Public Libraries; or search for census records at the National Archives Regional Office.

From the vital record certificate, city directory or census record you should be able to determine where the individuals lived at the time you are researching.

 
2. Find the location of the records that interest you
Because the sacramental records are not centralized, you will need to contact the local parish or office that houses the records you need. Should a parish have closed or have been consolidated or renamed you may search by using the original name of the parish to find the files’ new location. You may also search by year of founding or zip code if you know the area.
